The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
