No fewer than 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
